Companion Animal Clinic Veterinarians and Licensed Veterinary Technicians use up-to-date tools and procedures. Our staff groomer and kennel attendants give your pet the personal care and attention they deserve, and our attentive office personnel take care of a myriad of details.
Clinic Facility
Our building provides a large hospital treatment area and extensive boarding facilities. This facility allows us to provide a full spectrum of care for our patients.

Our Doctors
Dr. Beth Kirby is a 1984 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. She came to Blacksburg in 1980, left from '84-'86, then came back to town to work at Companion. She is a life-long equestrienne and lives on a farm in McCoy with her husband, seven horses, five cats, two dogs and assorted feathered friends.
She is a rabid Hokie football fan and tailgater. She enjoys gardening, cooking, scuba diving and playing with the critters. She and her Norfolk Terrier Sherman assist with the DAWGS (Dogs Assisting With Grade Schoolers) program.
She is currently a member of SWVVMA, VVMA, AVMA, VA Horse Council and AAVEP. |

Dr. Marta Downey graduated from VMRCVM 1986
and has been at CAC since graduation. She has made her home in Blacksburg
since
1980 and enjoys outdoor activities with her husband and children, such
as hiking, camping, canoeing, skiing and biking. She has watched
and coached
hundreds of her kids' soccer games. She is an avid Lady Hokies basketball
fan and a football fan. Dr. Downey loves to play practical jokes on her
co-workers.
She has three cats (Tulip, Buster and Finian) and a dog named Chaco. Marta is a member of the Southwest
Virginia
Veterinary Medical Association and several national veterinary associations.
She was instrumental in obtaining, and now maintaining, our AAHA Certification.
Dr. Downey has participated in Rural Area Medical, a service group of
medical professionals that travels to remote areas and provides free
basic veterinary
care and surgery to impoverished communities. |

Dr. Matt McCormick graduated from VMRCVM in 1989 and joined CAC in 1990.
He loves all little, helpless creatures - nursing kittens and rodents
- with a gentle dedication. He loves to meet new people, and knows enough
trivia to win "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". He has an interest
in exotics, including reptiles and small mammals, especially bunnies.
He loves to try new things, from learning to ski, to making gourmet desserts.
He loves chocolate. He has a dog, Terra, four cats and a bird named Cyrano.
Dr. McCormick is currently president of the Southwest Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, and is also a member of the Society of Small Mammal
Medicine and past president of Midatlantic Association of Avian Veterinarians. He has also been a guest lecturer on exotic animal medicine at VMRCVM, and acts as a mentor for veterinary students.
Matt and his wife Liz have a baby daughter. Matt thinks his daughter is better than a puppy. |

Dr. Angela Gamboni, a 2007 graduate of the VMRCVM, has joined the team at Companion Animal Clinic. In her spare time she enjoys running, biking and horseback riding. She has two horses, Ziggy and Sue, that still reside in Virginia Beach. |

Dr. Erin Herring completed her degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1996 from North Carolina State University. Following this, she came to Blacksburg and completed an internship and residency at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), becoming an ACVIM diplomate in Internal Medicine in 2000. She worked at VMRCVM following this, and has been at Companion Animal Clinic since the spring of 2007.
She is married and has three children, a dog, and two kittens. Her hobbies include biking, running, knitting, and hand spinning. |

Dr. Colleen Rossmeisl graduated from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. Before going to vet school, Dr. Rossmeisl previously worked as an environmental engineer in Blacksburg and received her engineering degrees from Virginia Tech.
After graduating from vet school, Dr. Rossmeisl worked in the field of environmental toxicology before turning her attention to clinical medicine. Her interests include urgent care and internal medicine, as well as physical therapy. She is currently pursuing additional training in small animal physical therapy to help assist our arthritic patients maintain a better quality of life. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.
Dr. Rossmeisl's personal interests include running, softball, hiking, fishing and general outdoor activities. She lives in Blacksburg with her husband, two children, and pets. |

Carrie M. graduated from Blue Ridge Community college in 1998 with a degree in Veterinary Technology. She started at Companion immediately following graduation and has now become the office manager. She has two dogs, Willie and Des, and two cats, Romi and Parker. She enjoys spending free time with her daughters, Tristan and Karlie. |

Carrie R. graduated from Blue Ridge Community College, with a degree in Veterinary Technology, in 1997. She's been with CAC since July 2001.
Her animals are her hobby, and it's a time consuming one at that. Carrie has nine cats, three dogs (Zoey,Sadie and Opus) and a 55 gallon fish tank with 30 beautiful fish! She's also an avid Hokie and Falcon fan! |

Aditya was previously employed with us, then left to obtain a license in Veterinary Technology. He graduated from Blue Ridge Community College in 2001. He’s a Certified Dental Technician as well. Oci and Colby, his 2 cats, and Gypsy, his dog, keep him on his toes. In his free time he enjoys cooking, sports and hanging out with his friends. |

Ashley C. (The Clinic Kamikaze) is one of our assistants. She has a German Shepherd mix name Tim; two cats, Homie and Tink; and a chinchilla, Gizmo. When she's not at work, she enjoys working with large animals, horses in particular. |

Dustan B. is a full-time Veterinary Assistant. He was born in Littleton, NC but has spent the past five years in Christiansburg, VA. Dustan is starting a veterinary technology program, to receive his certification, in the fall. His general interests include painting, music, long nights out on the town, and his pets. Dustan currently has what he considers to be his own zoo: two dogs, one cat, one turtle, one frog and seven fish tanks. |

Julie S. grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and has lived in Blacksburg since 2000. She completed her B.S. in Animal Science from VT in 2005, with an emphasis in equine production/management. She hopes someday to get into vet school. Julie has two dogs, Rufus and Dank, and a catfish. When she's not working at CAC, or at her other job at Cabo Fish Taco, Julie likes to play outside...fishing, camping, teaching riding lessons, etc. |

Jenny P. Kennel Supervisor. Jenny began her relationship with Companion in 1987. She left for some time to pursue other goals and has now returned. She resides in Riner with her 13 year old daughter, Kelsey, 2 cats, Nosey and Navi, and her new puppy, Meli.
In her spare time she enjoys reading, spending quality time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. |

Samantha L. Full time kennel staff. Samantha was born in Miami, Florida and has been living in Virginia since she was 6. Recently she had a beautiful baby boy. Her extended family consist of 2 dogs, Madison and Cricket, and 2 cats, adopted from Companion in 2006, Isis and Tut. |

Peggy L. Groomer. Peggy has had many pets, including ferrets, goats, fish, chickens, many dogs and cats. She currently has a Leopard Kerr hound named Emily, a cat, Pauline, and a 50 gallon outdoor pond with 4 goldfish.
In 1995, Peggy took 6 ½ months off from her duties at Companion to fulfill a life-long dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, an experience she will never forget. She has also biked the C & O Canal Tow Path, running from Georgetown to Cumberland, MD.
She enjoys anything outdoors, including hiking, biking, fishing, camping, attending old time music festivals with her husband, Sam. Another favorite hobby is to work on their 100+ year old home made of hand-hewn logs.
