*** IMPORTANT: PET FOOD RECALL ***
The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) issued a voluntary recall on July 25, 2010 of two specific lots of its therapeutic renal dry cat food in North America due to a possible salmonella health risk. As a further precaution, P&G is voluntarily expanding its recall to include additional veterinary formulas and some specialized Eukanuba dry pet food.

These products are made in a single, specialized facility. In cooperation with FDA, P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for salmonella contamination. No salmonella-related illnesses have been confirmed. As a precautionary measure, P&G is suspending operations at this facility and recalling all dry pet food products manufactured at this plant, which include:

About Companion Animal Clinic

After Hours Emergency

If you have an after hours emergency requiring immediate medial attention, please call the Virginia Tech vet school's emergency line at (540) 231-4621.
Companion Animal Clinic was founded in 1974 by Dr. Jim Shuler. Shuler graduated from Virginia Tech in 1966 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He graduated from the University of Georgia Veterinary Medical School in 1970. He practiced until 1973 at Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. Deciding he wanted to move back to Blacksburg, a growing university town with ample arts, entertainment and outdoor opportunities, he started out as a solo practitioner at Companion Animal Clinic. Within 4 or 5 years, the practice started to grow and he hired associates.

The clinic started out as a doublewide on Landsdowne Street, with many subsequent additions. In 1982 a new building was constructed on South Main Street. The clinic remained in this location until the Smart Road and 460 Bypass claimed the site. Companion opened at the current location in September 1998. (More about our facility)

Dr. Kirby and Dr. Downey took over the clinic when Dr. Shuler retired from veterinary medicine. He currently represents Blacksburg in the Virginia House of Delegates. We thank him for starting and mentoring Companion Animal Clinic. Jim established the care, quality, and pursuance of excellent medicine.
